While the kids today crave for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, older generations might have big smiles on their faces as classic video games have just been uploaded by the Internet Archives. Gamers of yesteryears can enjoy the hottest video games they used to play on their old consoles, through their web browsers by visiting the “Console Living Room.”. The collection, launched Thursday, features hundreds of game titles that were rolled out during the time of the Astrocade, Magnavox Odyssey2, Colecovision, Atari 7800, and Atari 2600.

The Console Living Room makes use of a web-based game JMESS emulator allowing users to play the games right in their browser, using the keyboard as their “joystick.” While the emulator cannot play sounds at the moment, the Internet Archives promises to fix this issue in the near future. “For a generation of children, the most exciting part of a Christmas morning was discovering a large box under the tree, ripping it apart, and looking at an exciting, colorful box promising endless video games,” a post on the Internet Archives blog recalls. “Sadly, the days of the home videogame console being a present under a tree followed by days of indulgent game-playing are not the same, replaced with massive launch events and overnight big-box store stays.”

“…the Console Living Room is in beta – the ability to interact with software in near-instantaneous real-time comes with the occasional bumps and bruises. An army of volunteer elves are updating information about each of the hundreds of game cartridges now available, and will be improving them across the next few days,” it added. While some may point out that a number of titles featured in the collection might still be copyrighted, somehow they are ignored by game makers since these titles are no longer widely available in the market. The Internet Archives also pointed out that access to these old games are meant to spark commentary and education, and of course enjoyment. At a time of the year when families feel nostalgic reminiscing the old days, the release of the Console Living Room has been very timely.

The New Crosby Hotel wished a “Merry Christmas” to the people of Beaumont and invited them to dinner on Dec. 25, 1903, charging them $1 per plate, according to a note written by a guest at the time who tucked it into a menu from the occasion and sent it to the hotel manager almost 41 years later, apparently as a keepsake. “Mr. W.M Casey, mgr, New Crosby Hotel. Dear Sir, I am sending you a menu of a Christmas dinner served for $1.00 per plate. I was at that time headquartering at the Crosby House. Sam Gastrell and I lived in Room #46. Yours truly, W. Maines Cochran.” The penmanship on the handwritten note is less-than-readable when it comes to deciphering the companies for which the two men worked. Toward the close of the message, Cochran told Casey he returned to his hometown of Waco. If Cochran and Gastrell dined in the Crosby for Christmas dinner, Cochran did not mention it. If they had, they would have been served a meal to delight early 20th century gastronomes and horrify weight-watchers of today.

Chef Charles Duit, a culinary arts instructor at Lamar University’s Hospitality Program, estimated such a meal might cost $150 per person today if it were to be recreated. “It’s not a cheap menu at all,” he said. And it’s before we thought anything about calories, nutrition or fats.” The menu runs at least four courses, from appetizer to dessert with two entrees, a “palate cleanser,” and a third entree in between. Let’s say you brought your appetite to the Crosby. Here’s what you would encounter – with Chef Duit’s comments on some of the offerings: Oysters on the half shell, queen olives, celery, caviar canape, salted almonds, cheese straws, consomme aux quenelles, green turtle a la Windsor and petits patte a la Ruschell. Duit said the consomme aux quenelles is a clear broth, but the quenelles probably mean a kind of mousse – chicken, perhaps – formed with a spoon into a shape similar to a small football and poached.

The “green turtle a la Windsor” also more than likely is another soup, he said. The “petits patte a la Ruschell” – and it’s anyone’s guess who Ruschell was – probably refers to little herb cakes or pies. Let’s bring on some protein.Next we have “broiled Spanish mackarel, maitre d’ hotel.” It’s the menu’s spelling of mackerel, so we’re going with that. The “maitre d’ hotel” refers to butter compounded with parsley, garlic and herbs, melting on top of the dish as it’s served at the table.

The Crosby got its hands on “stuffed mangoes” to serve with the Spanish mack along with “potatoes, en Bordure,” which could mean mashed potatoes piped around the mackerel, bordering it. All right, we’ve put all of that away. Now it’s time to get down to the roast prime rib of beef with the Yorkshire pudding, which is made from the roasted beef drippings mixed with bread and eggs with a consistency like dressing, Duit said. With the beef dish comes mashed potatoes, French peas and candied sweet potatoes. The Crosby’s guests also could lay into a roast young turkey with chestnut dressing, cranberry sauce, cauliflower in cream and asparagus with drawn butter, which is slowly melted with the impurities filtered out. Something richer for your palate, perhaps? Tuck into the breast of domestic duck, larded with olives. That means for every slice you get of duck breast, you will find olives have been poked into it, Duit said. For the truly adventurous, make room on your plate for the “braised veal sweetbreads, a la Batson.” As many might be aware, veal is very young calf, still nursing on its mother’s milk and likely has never seen the light of day. We aren’t talking about “sweetened breads,” either. “Sweetbreads” are the thymus gland, Duit said. “Most people have a hard time eating it,” he said. “I’ve not had it for eight or 10 years. I had it flown in for a friend and prepared it for a Christmas meal. If it’s not cooked properly, it could be very chewy.” After all the richness, it’s time to cleanse the palate. These were in the days before sorbets, so let’s knock back a “creme de menthe frappe” and chase it with lemon Nabisco. Maybe it’s time for a little stretch and amble over to someone else’s table. On their plate might be our final entree, a roast leg of venison with currant jelly with some orange salad and lettuce with French dressing.

Who’s up for dessert?

The Crosby Hotel invites you to dig into English plum pudding with hard sauce or brandy sauce. The “pudding” is more of a solid mountain of plum, raisins, currants, citron, candied fruits, cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, Cognac, sherry, eggs and sugar, Duit said. “It’s pretty dense,” he said. And the sauce? Butter, sugar, booze. No? How about hot mince pie, banana cream meringue pie, chocolate ice cream, assorted cake, maraschino jelly, fruit, mixed nuts, raisins, Roquefort and Swiss cheese and “Toasted Bent’s Crackers.” And coffee to fight off your oncoming food coma. Merry Christmas, from Hageman & Kidd, proprietors. That closes the book on the New Crosby’s menu of 1903 at its Crockett and Orleans five-story hotel, which closed its doors in 1973 and finally was torn down in 1976.

$200 million, that’s how much it may cost to build a new downtown hotel tied to the new MAPS 3 convention center. On Tuesday, the city council got a look at those numbers.One city councilman criticized the proposed hotel project as an irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars.At the same time, the hotel plans have seeped into the race for mayor in Oklahoma City. Ed Shadid, city council member, said,”We are moving toward possible ownership of a $200 million hotel without a vote of the people.”

Shadid, who’s running for mayor, believes that since it’s unlikely a private developer would pay for the entire hotel project, the city will have to fund much of the plan. He said, “Even without complete ownership, it’s going to require massive taxpayer subsidies and people should be able to vote on whether they want that kind of commitment.”Mayor Mick Cornett says it’s simply not clear how much of the hotel’s cost would have to be publicly subsidized.

He adds that when the Cox Convention Center got expanded in the first MAPS project, some public money was spent on the Renaissance Hotel project. The only difference this time is the size of the investment. “At this point, it’s premature to talk about any public-private partnership that may be involved,” said Cornett. “It’s a moving target to know exactly what type of convention center hotel we need long-term.” A separate study will detail how much public money will be needed to make the hotel feasible. Shadid also criticized that the release of that study won’t happen until after next year’s mayoral election.

A Seoul court rejected Samsung’s claim that iPhone and iPad models violated three of its patents, another setback for the South Korean electronics giant in a global battle with Apple over rights to technologies that power smartphones and tablets.

A Seoul Central District Court judge ruled Thursday that Apple did not violate Samsung’s intellectual property rights. The technology in two of Samsung’s patents could be developed easily from other inventions, Judge Shim Woo-yong said, making it unlikely they were copied. He said one patent was not used in the iPad.

“We are glad the Korean court joined others around the world in standing up for real innovation and rejecting Samsung’s ridiculous claims,” Apple Inc. spokesman Steve Park said.

Samsung Electronics Co. sued Apple in March 2012, accusing the iPhone maker of illegally using three patented technologies related to short message services in smartphones and tablet computers.

The maker of Galaxy smartphones sought 100 million won ($95,000) in initial compensation and a ban on sales of six iPhone and iPad models, which included models still available in the market, such as those with Retina display.

The judge said Samsung’s patent for a multitasking technology that prevents incomplete messages being lost when switching to another application was not violated by the existence of a similar technology. Another technology that enables users to touch a notification box to access a message can be invented easily, he said.

A third Samsung patent for how mobile devices display short messages from the same sender together was not used in Apple’s iPad, which instead has Apple’s iMessage application, Shim said.

I’ve got hundreds of photos from my recent Europe trip, split between a smartphone and a big camera. A lot are shots of the same thing — my attempt to get the perfect lighting on a fountain or a cathedral, for example — so that I’ll have these scenes to remember always.

So I was interested to read a new study in the journal Psychological Science suggesting that the act of taking photos may actually diminish what we remember about objects being photographed.

“People just pull out their cameras,” says study author Linda Henkel, researcher in the department of psychology at Fairfield University in Connecticut. “They just don’t pay attention to what they’re even looking at, like just capturing the photo is more important than actually being there.”

At the same time, she found that zooming in on objects helps preserve people’s memory of them, beyond just the detail on which they zoomed.

Henkel’s father is a photographer, so she has been hanging around photos and taking photos all her life. She wanted to see if snapping photos of objects would impact people’s memories of what they saw at a museum.

This study had a small sample size: 27 undergraduates participated in the first part, and 46 in the second. Both groups were mostly women. In order to strengthen the conclusions, this research would need to be replicated with a lot more people and a more balanced sex ratio, not to mention a wider range of demographic characteristics such as age.

But this is an interesting start. It underscores the point that there are different ways that the brain processes information: At an automatic level, by taking pictures, and at a more meaningful level, by focusing on a specific object or something with a personal association, said Paul D. Nussbaum, clinical neuropsychologist at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

It’s that deeper level that enables memories to form, Nussbaum said in an e-mail.

“The more we engage our brain into processing a stimuli and the more personal that processing is, the more solid the memory formation and recall,” he said.

Photos impairing memory?

For the first experiment, participants went to the Bellarmine Museum of Art. One-third of them had never been to the museum before. They visited 30 objects, spanning such media as painting, sculpture, jewelry and pottery.

One group of students was instructed to read the name of each object out loud, look at the object for 20 seconds and then take a photo of it. The other participants looked at an object for 30 seconds without taking a picture.

The following day, participants were asked to write down the names of all objects they remembered from the museum, and to indicate which they photographed. They could describe any objects whose names they could not recall.

Then, they were given a list of 30 objects and were asked to indicate which they had seen, which they had photographed and which were not on the tour. They also answered questions about details of objects, and completed a photo-recognition test of objects they may or may not have seen.

Henkel found that people performed worse on memory recognition tasks in reference objects they had photographed, compared to objects they had observed with their eyes only. Similarly, they appeared to remember fewer details about what they photographed, compared to the ones they had only seen.

“When we distract ourselves and count on the camera to remember for us, then we don’t remember as many objects,” she said. “We don’t remember as many details about the objects.”

Zooming protecting memory

The second experiment gave participants 25 seconds to view each object, in addition to extra time for photographing when that was asked of them. That meant they had extra time with objects that they had to photograph. Some were also asked to zoom in on specific parts of the objects.

The next day, it was time to test their memory: Participants had to indicate, from a list of names of art objects, which were part of the tour they had been on.

For objects they remembered, participants were asked to say whether they had photographed the object or just seen it, and answer two questions about visual aspects of the object.

Henkel found a similar effect as in the first experiment: Photographed objects tended to be associated with a decline in memory about them.

But here is the twist: Zooming in on one part of the object preserved participants’ memory about that entire object, not just the part on which the camera zoomed. Accuracy was about the same, regardless of whether participants just observed objects or zoomed in on individual parts.

Henkel explains that when you zoom in on part of an object, it’s drawing your visual attention there, but you’re also thinking about the object as a whole.

“So what your eyes are doing, what the camera is doing, is not the same thing as what your brain is doing,” Henkel said.

In other words, when you spend the extra time and attention to zoom in on something, you’re likely to remember aspects of it as well as if you had just observed it without a camera.

The bigger picture

OK, so maybe it’s a little more complicated than just “taking photos is bad for your memory.” That’s good news, since people took more than 3 billion photos in 2012, according to an estimate cited in the study, and 300 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily.

Still, says Nussbaum, “I wonder sometimes how much we may be missing when we rely so much on technological gadgets rather than using our brains.”

Henkel points out that the advent of digital photography has overstepped the age-old traditions of printing photos out, putting them in scrapbooks and sitting around with your family and looking at them. That sounds a little like using a paper map.

But maybe those photo-related activities that make us take time to reminisce do enhance our memory of the experiences we have tried to photograph so diligently.

“If we’re going to going to rely on that external memory device of the camera to remember for us, we’ve got to take that extra step and look at it,” Henkel says.

Keep that in mind this holiday season when you take hundreds of photos with with friends and family.

Apple’s (AAPL) stock price Thursday initially rocketed toward record territory for the year, partly on a report that it had finally reached a deal to sell iPhones through China Mobile. But the shares lost steam after an official with the Chinese company said the two firms were still negotiating. The Wall Street Journal, quoting what it called “a person familiar with the situation,” said Apple and China Mobile had signed an agreement to sell the phones on the Chinese company’s network, the world’s biggest carrier with more than 700 million subscribers. The story added that the deal was in anticipation of China Mobile’s Dec. 18 launch of its fourth-generation network.

However, Reuters disputed that report, quoting China Mobile spokeswoman Rainie Lei, who said, “we are still negotiating with Apple, but for now we have nothing new to announce.” Apple spokeswoman Teresa Brewer declined to comment. The Cupertino consumer electronics giant typically announces major new deals with telecom carriers. At one point Thursday, Apple’s shares hit $577.25. If they had closed at that price, it would have been the stock’s highest level since Nov. 6 last year. But the shares eventually closed at $567.90, an increase from the previous day of $2.90 or about half a percent. Part of the stock’s rise had been attributed to plans by billionaire Apple investor Carl Icahn to pressure Apple’s board to buy back $50 billion worth of its stock. Such buybacks typically benefit shareholders by boosting the stock’s price. But Wall Street was especially intrigued by news that a deal with China Mobile — if not actually signed — might be imminent after several years of negotiations between the two companies.

Millions of people who have bought iPhones from black-market and other sources already use China Mobile’s network. Nonetheless, analysts say Apple’s sales would increase substantially if the phone was offered directly by the giant carrier, especially if China Mobile subsidized the iPhone’s price or it was discounted by Apple to make it more affordable for Chinese customers.Pacific Crest Securities analysts estimated Thursday that Apple could sell up to 15 million more iPhones a year and see its stock price rise to $585 if it reached a deal with China Mobile. Apple shipped a total of 135.8 million iPhones in 2012, making it the second-biggest smartphone vendor behind Samsung, which shipped 213 million, according to Strategy Analytics. Analysts at Deutsche Bank Securities were even more upbeat. In a note to their clients Thursday, they predicted such a deal would enable Apple to sell 20 million more iPhones within a year and boost Apple’s shares to $625, adding that “China Mobile represents a significant, largely untapped market opportunity.”

Finally reaching an agreement with China Mobile would be “a positive development” for Apple, said Alex Gauna of JMP Securities. But he remained cautious about the prospects for a deal, noting that as of Thursday, the carrier was promoting eight Android phones on its website but didn’t mention the iPhone. John Bright, an analyst with Avondale Partners, said he considers it likely that China Mobile eventually will offer the iPhone on its network, because its customers will want that. But while such a deal also “is a strategic must” for Apple, it’s unclear how much the Cupertino company would benefit, he said, because it depends on whether Apple would have to discount the iPhones price or offer other incentives that might cut into its revenue.

In an encouraging sign of life beyond earth, NASA scientists have found faint signatures of water in the atmospheres of five distant planets.

Though the presence of atmospheric water was reported previously on a few exoplanets orbiting stars beyond the solar system, but this is the first study to conclusively measure and compare the profiles and intensities of these signatures on multiple worlds, NASA said.

The five planets — WASP-17b, HD209458b, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b—orbit nearby stars, a NASA report said adding that this was based on the research done through the Hubble telescope. The strengths of their water signatures varied, it said. WASP-17b, a planet with an especially puffed-up atmosphere, and HD209458b had the strongest signals.

The signatures for the other three planets, WASP-12b, WASP-19b and XO-1b, also are consistent with water, NASA said. “We’re very confident that we see a water signature for multiple planets,” said Avi Mandell, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland., and lead author of an Astrophysical Journal paper, published on Tuesday, describing the findings for WASP-12b, WASP-17b and WASP-19b.

“This work really opens the door for comparing how much water is present in atmospheres on different kinds of exoplanets, for example hotter versus cooler ones,” Mandell said. NASA said the five planets are hot Jupiters, massive worlds that orbit close to their host stars. The researchers were initially surprised that all five appeared to be hazy. “These studies, combined with other Hubble observations, are showing us that there are a surprisingly large number of systems for which the signal of water is either attenuated or completely absent,” said Heather Knutson of the California Institute of Technology, a co-author. “This suggests that cloudy or hazy atmospheres may in fact be rather common for hot Jupiters,” he added. Their agnostic, unbiased portal helps consumers validate hotels, while an increasingly friendly set of hotel marketing tools and programs allows hotel marketers to steer relevant consumers directly to the property website. Sure, negative reviews can hurt, but handled properly, they also demonstrate honesty and authenticity.

Evangelical Customers: More than a few hotel marketers we surveyed gave high praise and thanks to their most evangelical customers, who spread their love of the property via social media and word of mouth. These repeat visitors Tweet, post, share and send photos of their favorite place to friends and relatives with absolutely no cost to the marketing budget.

A great location: Easily forgotten in an age of high-tech marketing is the importance of location, location, location! More than a few hotel marketers are giving thanks this year for a competitively-advantageous location that puts them by the airport, near Times Square, next to the convention center or smack dab on a private Caribbean beach!

Google’s recent updates: Huh? Blasphemy you say?! Surprisingly, many hotel marketers see opportunity deep in the heart of the problems created by almighty Google changing the search engine game every few months. These enlightened marketers were able to quickly adapt… implementing new best-practices assets (i.e. perfecting local search tactics) and eliminating old, lazy, spammy techniques that end up penalizing less astute competitors.

Active retirees: Grandma and Grandpa like to hit the road. Retirees are more mobile, more healthy and more wealthy than ever before. This translates to more bookings… direct bookings to be exact, because older folks prefer to book (or call) directly. According to Resonance Consultancy: “Unstoppable Elders” travel 25% more than the average leisure traveler and prefer off-peak travel, which bolsters properties affected by seasonality.

Resurgent economies: Hotel marketers are giving thanks this year for resurgent economies at home and abroad. Key industry metrics have surpassed pre-recession levels, business travel is back and consumer confidence is improving. Better yet, strong economic growth in key US-feeder markets like China and South America has elevated ADRs from free-spending FITs.-

The Mobile explosion: Tech-savvy hotel marketers will remember 2013 as the year they truly figured out how to benefit from the proliferation of mobile devices. The adoption of smartphones enables us to target new guests, streamline booking confirms, offer express check-in, communicate in-stay offers, enhance the guest experience and empower social sharing.

A strong loyalty program: Whether it’s a flag/chain-related program, a credit card/airline partnership or third-party frequent guest club, many hotel marketers are giving thanks this year to their loyalty program and its captive audience of incentivized travelers.

Find a Professional Designer
So the first step would be to find a professional Web designer. Unless you have been educated in design and have a lot of time to dedicate to learning the craft, you probably cannot do it yourself. This isn’t a “one click and you’re done” scenario. Good design takes patience and lots of iteration.

Once you find the right Web designer that you think you can have a partnership with, the next step is to let him or her know the direction of your business strategy.
